KILIMANJARO TREK & SAFARI - $4,500 USD

DATES TBD - 9 DAYS

TANZANIA

Did you know that the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is called Uhuru Peak, which means “Freedom” in Swahili? Why Freedom? A young African leader named Julius Nyerere, made the following commitment to his people, “We the people of Tanganyika, would like to light a candle and put it at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, which would shine beyond our borders giving hope where there is despair, love where there is hate, and dignity where there was before only humiliation.” In 1961, after independence was granted and Tanganyika became Tanzania, a torch was placed on the summit of Kilimanjaro. Isn’t that beautiful?

As we make our journey up Mt. Kilimanjaro in search of our own personal freedoms, we will certainly be pushed to our limits. We will be accompanied by guides, porters, a chef, and a doctor. This highly knowledgeable and experienced crew will be there every step of the way guiding and motivating us until we reach the Freedom Summit!

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania

We will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transferred to our hotel in Moshi Town. We will meet our guide who will brief us on the trek. We will do an equipment check to make sure we have all the necessary mountain gear. If you are missing any gear, then you can rent it for an additional fee paid directly to the tour company. We will stay overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge (or an alternative). We will enjoy a group dinner and an early restful night.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

After breakfast, we will be transferred from our lodge in Moshi to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paper work is completed, then our trek will begin. Ahhh! We will hike through the dense rain forest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, we will have the chance to watch a glimpse of some primates as we head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, our guide will take us to the Maundi Crater where we will enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior. Distance covered: 8.3km / 5.2mi. Approx. time: 5 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Day 3: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)

The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after we leave the Mandara Hut, we will reach the timberline, and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, we will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo, and the wide plain of the Masai steppe. Distance covered: 12.5km / 7.8mi. Approx. time: 9 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Day 4: Acclimatization trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m) then back to Horombo Hut (3700m)

Today serves as an acclimatization day. This should not be underestimated as it greatly improves our chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, we will make a 4-hour trek to the Zebra Rocks (4020m). The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. On our return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for us. We can relax in the afternoon and regain our strength for the hike the following day. Distance covered: 5km / 3.1mi. Approx. time: 4 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Our destination is the Kibo Hut, which usually takes about 5 - 6 hours. When we arrive, we will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short. Distance covered: 9.5km / 5.9mi. Approx. time: 7 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m)

Today is the big day!!!! We will begin our final ascent around midnight, which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, we will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. We will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a hike of 1 - 2 hours, we will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m! On our return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits us followed by a 1 - 2 hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut. Distance covered: 22km / 13.7mi. Approx. time: 12 – 15 hours. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)

The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for us. Soon after, we will once again pass the tropical rainforest. After trekking for approximately 6 hours, we will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). We will say goodbye to our mountain guides, and then take a short transfer back to our hotel in Moshi Town. We will stay overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge (or an alternative). Once there, we will take a warm relaxing shower, and then we will celebrate! Distance covered: 20.8km / 12.9mi. Approx. time: 8 hours Meals: Breakfast & Lunch included

Day 8: Depart Tanzania & head to Tarangire National Park

We will be picked up at our hotel in Moshi Town and transferred to the Tarangire National Park to start our game viewing experience. This magnificent park is famous for its large collection of baobab trees, spectacular large mammal population, and variety of bird species, not to mention one of the largest concentration of elephants in the country. After we tour around the park, we will be transferred to Maromboi Tented Camp where we will be spending the night. We will enjoy an evening sundowner after our game drive with complimentary drinks.  Meals: Lunch & Dinner included

Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater

We will depart the camp at around 6am, and head to the Ngorongoro Crater for our final game drive. The crater is not only the largest unbroken caldera in the world, but it is also one of the new 7 natural wonders of Africa. After our morning game drive, we will take a break to enjoy our packed lunch at the Hippo Pool Picnic site. After lunch, we will be transferred back to  the airport in the afternoon. We will stop at curio shops where we can grab some souvenirs to take back home. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch included
